What OpenAI switched on
ChatGPT Ads will rewrite your ads on its own unless you turn the setting off. OpenAI's creative enhancements help page says the feature is enabled automatically for new and existing campaigns from October 29, and that enhanced ads "can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version". The advertiser email, reproduced by Search Engine Roundtable, gives October 30. Opting out before the earlier date covers both.
Four things can change. OpenAI may write new headlines and descriptions, translate the ad text into another language, resize images to fit the format, and send the click to a different page on your website that it judges more relevant. The inputs are the conversation or the user's interests, your existing ad, and the content of the ad's landing page. Variations can be prepared in advance or generated during the conversation.
The control sits in Ads Manager under Manage settings. Existing opt-outs at account and campaign level are preserved, and a campaign setting overrides the account default. That last detail is the useful one: you can turn enhancements off for the account and on for a single campaign you want to test.
Separately, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing availability to 89, and said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns. Ads still appear only on the Free and Go plans.
What the announcement leaves out
The help page says enhancements are "designed to" improve performance. It gives no performance data, so treat the effect as unknown until you measure it in your own account. It also says nothing about how a replacement destination page is chosen, beyond "a relevant page on your website". Your collection pages, old promotion pages and out-of-season landing pages are all candidates.
The email refers to self-serve campaigns. The help page refers to campaigns in general. If you run product feed ads, where titles and descriptions come from your catalog feed, check the setting on those campaigns rather than assuming they are excluded. One trade report notes that the earlier ad generation option in ChatGPT Ads kept a review step before an ad ran. This setting drops that step.
The decision: where is the copy allowed to come from?
This is not an ads setting question. It is a question about whether your landing pages and product details can be read out of context and still say the right thing. From October 29, the landing page is source material for copy you will not see before it runs. A page with a stale price, an expired promotion in the hero or a description that repeats the title becomes the raw material for a rewritten headline.
So the decision is: for which campaigns are the ads and their landing pages accurate and specific enough to be rewritten without you? Keep enhancements on there. Turn them off everywhere else until the pages are fixed. A blanket opt-out is the safe default for a team that cannot audit every landing page before the end of the month.
The work before October 29
List the pages ads can land on
Pull the destination URL of every active ad. Then list the other pages on your site that an engine could plausibly treat as "relevant" for the same products: the product page, its collection, any promotion page and any older campaign landing page still live. For each one, check the price, the promotion wording, availability and the product details against what the ad promises. Retire or update the pages you would not want a click to land on.
Make the original ad specific
OpenAI's own guidance is to write "clear, specific copy explaining what you offer and why it may be useful" and to keep prices, promotions, product details and availability current. Rewrites start from your text. An ad that says what the product is for, who it suits and what is included gives the system less room to invent. A vague ad invites a vague rewrite.
Decide translation and markets
Translation only matters where your campaigns reach people outside your main language. With 26 new countries available, confirm your targeting before the setting goes live. If your checkout, support and shipping are English and US only, a translated ad that lands on an English page is a cost without a sale behind it. Opt out of enhancements on campaigns where that applies, or narrow the targeting.
Keep one campaign as a control
Because campaign settings override the account default, you can run a fair comparison. Pick one campaign with clean landing pages, leave enhancements on, and keep a matching campaign off. Record a dated baseline before October 29: impressions and spend per product, click-through and the conversion events Ads Manager can see. Read the enhanced and control campaigns side by side for at least a few weeks before changing budgets.
Watch where clicks land
Destination URL optimization is the change most likely to show up in your analytics first. After the switch, compare the landing pages receiving ChatGPT ad traffic against the pages you set in the campaign. A new page appearing in that list is the signal to open the page and read it as a shopper would. If the page is wrong, fix the page or turn enhancements off for that campaign.
What to leave for later
Do not rewrite the whole catalog to prepare for this. The pages that matter are the ones ads point to and their nearest neighbours. Do not judge the setting on the first week's numbers, and do not treat a swing in reported conversions as evidence of anything until the events behind it are checked, which we covered in ChatGPT Ads conversion warnings. Leave translation strategy until the English campaigns are stable.
Why this is product information work
Every input to a creative enhancement is something your team already owns: the ad text, the landing page and the product details on it. The setting makes those pages the source of truth for copy that runs without review. Making them accurate, specific and current is the same work that makes a product describable in a ChatGPT answer or eligible in a product feed, which is why we treat it as product information rather than as a media setting.
This is the kind of check a Paz expert runs for lean ecommerce teams: reading the ads, the feed and the landing pages together, finding where they disagree, and fixing the product information within guidelines you approve, while your media buyer keeps the budget and the Ads Manager settings.
