Why the question comes up
Buyers hear "Google AI" in a report and ask whether that means Gemini, AI Mode or AI Overviews. It can mean any of them.
Most buyers start with ChatGPT and then ask about Google AI, usually in the same words: "Here in Google AI, what does it mean? Does it include Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews?" All three carry Google branding and can show a product, but they appear in different places, read different inputs and are reported in different tools.
- AI Overviews are the summary at the top of a normal Google results page.
- AI Mode is the conversational tab inside Google Search, with follow-up questions and shopping results.
- Gemini is the standalone assistant at gemini.google.com, in the Gemini mobile app and in Chrome.

AI Overviews: the summary above the results
A summary of web sources with supporting links, shown only when Google decides it adds something to classic Search.
AI Overviews appear above the ranked results when Google decides a summary helps. Google's documentation on AI features and your website states that they are shown only when they are additive to classic Search, which means they often stay off the page, and that they may run several related searches across subtopics and sources to build a response with a wider set of supporting links.
What they draw on is the open web. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and those Search fundamentals are the full requirement. Google's best practices are the familiar ones: crawlable pages, content in text form, structured data that matches the visible text, and Merchant Center information kept current. The PDPs that answer the questions shoppers ask in plain text are the ones that get cited. See Google AI Overviews for the longer entry.
AI Mode: the conversational tab with shopping results
Answers shopping questions with web results and Google Merchant Center product data, shows prices from several merchants and can check out with eligible US retailers.
AI Mode lives on its own tab in Google Search, for questions that need exploration or comparison. The product side comes from Google Merchant Center. Google's AI Mode purchases help page describes clicking a product to see details and prices from various merchants, choosing the variant and buying from eligible US retailers with Google Pay.
Shopify's Selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini page states that products reach both surfaces through the Google and YouTube sales channel or GMC, that product discovery is powered by GMC, and that direct checkout is rolling out to eligible US stores with a valid GMC account. So the product information AI Mode shows is the information in your GMC account, matched against the questions shoppers ask. The Google AI Mode shopping entry covers the attributes that matter most.
Gemini: the standalone app that shops from the Shopping Graph
The Gemini app shops from Google's Shopping Graph, with product cards, reviews, buying options and purchases from eligible merchants.
Gemini is the assistant shoppers open on purpose, the way they open ChatGPT. Google's Gemini Apps shopping help states that Gemini uses information from Google's Shopping Graph to find and compare products, that product cards open to descriptions, reviews and buying options, and that shopping works in the Gemini web app, the mobile app and Gemini in Chrome, with purchases from eligible merchants.
GMC's free listings help lists Gemini among the places eligible free listings can appear, and Shopify treats Google AI Mode and Gemini as one channel fed by the same GMC account. For product information, AI Mode and Gemini are the same job: a complete, current GMC listing with the attributes shoppers ask about, backed by a PDP that says the same thing.
How each one is reported
Search Console reports AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions per page, GMC reports brand share of voice for shopping questions on both, and the Gemini app shows up as a referrer.
Search Console
The generative AI performance report shows impressions your pages earned in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions, drawn from the Web search type of the regular Performance report. The Gemini app is separate from Google Search and is reported through its referrer, gemini.google.com, covered in how to track traffic and sales from ChatGPT.
Google Merchant Center
The AI performance insights report in GMC Analytics shows how your brand performs for shopping questions on AI Mode and AI Overviews: share of voice against the competitors GMC has defined for you, how many of your products are showing, and the top terms and popular attributes by shopping stage. It covers one product category at a time, counts organic traffic only, and is available for English-language questions in the United States, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand.
Per-question tracking adds the product-level view, whether a given product appeared for a given question, with the appearance types Paz records.
Which one Paz treats as diagnostic, and why
AI Mode and Gemini are recommendation surfaces. AI Overviews are captured as a diagnostic signal and reported separately.
For each set of the questions shoppers ask in your category, Paz records per assistant whether your products appear and in what form: product card, product mention, brand mention or source citation. ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot are tracked this way because each is a place a shopper goes for a recommendation.
AI Overviews are handled differently. Paz captures each one as present, not shown or failed for the question and reports it separately. Overviews often stay off the page, so a missing Overview says little about your product information. When one does appear, its citations show which pages Google trusts for that question, and whether a competitor's PDP or a retailer's buying guide is doing the answering. That is a diagnostic: a reading of the category's sources, used to decide what to fix. The methodology page documents the capture.
Our experts then fix the product information behind each gap at the source, so AI Mode, Gemini and the Overviews all read the better version, and report appearances per surface against your baseline, as part of the AI visibility service.
