Does fixing product information for ChatGPT also help Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot?

Mostly yes, because the assistants read the same sources: your product pages, Google Merchant Center, Shopify Catalog, the OpenAI product feed and Microsoft Merchant Center. Fix the product information once at the source and each destination inherits it. Recommendations still differ by assistant, so you track appearances per assistant.

The short answer

The product information that gets a product into an answer is shared. The eligibility steps and some fields are destination-specific. The ranking is always the assistant's own.

Buyers ask this in almost every call: if we fix it for ChatGPT, does Gemini get better too? What about Perplexity and Copilot? The answer has three parts.

  • Shared. Identifiers, availability, price parity, category attributes, page copy that answers the questions shoppers ask, structured data that matches the page, reviews and visible Q&A. Every assistant reads some combination of these from your product pages and feeds.
  • Destination-specific. Feed eligibility flags, merchant policy fields, enrollment steps and a few attributes that only one destination defines.
  • Always separate. Which products an assistant recommends for a given question. Each one ranks on its own logic, so one fix can lift ChatGPT appearances this month and Gemini appearances later, or the other way round.

What each assistant reads

Map each assistant to its shopping inputs, from primary documentation, so you know where a fix has to land.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT shopping results draw on the OpenAI product feed, on Shopify Catalog for eligible Shopify stores through agentic storefronts, and on your public product pages crawled by OAI-SearchBot. Shopify describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel where shoppers finish the purchase on your online store checkout.

Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini

Google's shopping answers use Google Merchant Center product data together with your indexed product pages. Google states there are no special requirements for AI features on Search beyond normal eligibility. Shopify stores reach Google AI Mode and Gemini through the Google and YouTube sales channel or a GMC account, and Shopify lists these surfaces as early access.

Perplexity

Perplexity answers and product cards are built from crawled pages and from product information shared through the Perplexity Merchant Program. Perplexity describes the program as free for merchants.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot shopping draws on Microsoft Merchant Center. Microsoft asks merchants to improve product visibility in Merchant Center with a UCP-ready feed, including return policy and support settings and a unique Merchant Item ID. Shopify lists Copilot as an agentic storefront in early access, fed from Shopify Catalog.

The fixes that carry across

Most of the work lives in the source record: identifiers, availability, attributes, page copy, schema parity, reviews and Q&A. Fix it once and every destination inherits it on the next sync.

  • Identifiers. A valid GTIN where one is assigned, otherwise brand and MPN. Google, OpenAI and Microsoft all key on them, and Shopify Catalog carries them forward.
  • Availability and price parity. The same values on the page, in GMC and in the OpenAI feed. A mismatch costs eligibility in one place and trust in another.
  • Category attributes. Fit, material, dimensions, compatibility, ingredients. These are what shoppers ask about and what assistants compare on.
  • Page copy that answers the questions shoppers ask. Visible text about who the product suits, what it works with and how to care for it. Crawled by every assistant.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Product and Offer markup aligned with visible content and with the feed.
  • Reviews and Q&A. Shown on the page and, where supported, passed in the feed. See product Q&A for AI shopping.

The fixes that are destination-specific

Each destination has an enrollment path and a handful of its own fields. These are finite, and once set they rarely change.

  • OpenAI feed. The eligibility flags for search and checkout, seller fields, return policy and target countries defined in the feed specification.
  • Google Merchant Center. Account verification, shipping and return settings, and the optional conversational attributes Google added for AI surfaces.
  • Microsoft Merchant Center. Store settings for return policy and customer support, plus the UCP attributes Microsoft lists for Copilot.
  • Shopify Catalog. Which channels may read your products, how product details map to Catalog fields and how variants group into one listing, all under Sales channels, then Agentic.
  • Perplexity. Enrollment in the merchant program and the product information you choose to share through it.

Treat these as setup. The recurring work is the shared list above.

Why results still differ, and how to track each assistant

Each assistant re-ranks on its own logic, so measure appearances per assistant with the same set of questions, and fix at the source so every destination gets the change.

Shopify's own search preview tool carries a useful warning: agentic storefronts often re-rank results with their own logic, so what one surface shows can differ from another for the same question. The same applies across ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity. Measuring one assistant tells you about that assistant.

So the working method is simple. Run the same set of the questions shoppers ask on each assistant on a schedule, record whether your products appear and in what form, and fix the product information behind each miss in the source your feeds and pages are built from. This is how Paz runs AI visibility. Our experts track ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, fix the catalog, feed and page information behind each gap within the guidelines you approve, and report appearances per assistant against your baseline. How to read the traffic side is covered in how to track traffic and sales from ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the visibility with all the chatbots or specifically ChatGPT?+
Both. ChatGPT is where most shoppers start today, so it leads the work, and the same product information reaches Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot through Google Merchant Center, Shopify Catalog, Microsoft Merchant Center and your product pages. Appearances are tracked per assistant because each one ranks differently.
Do we need a separate feed for each assistant?+
You need the destinations each assistant reads: the OpenAI product feed or Shopify Catalog for ChatGPT, Google Merchant Center for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Merchant Center for Copilot. Most teams keep one clean catalog and map it to each format, so the attributes and answers are written once. Paz builds and pushes the OpenAI feed from the same catalog it fixes.
Where is Copilot in all this?+
Copilot shopping reads Microsoft Merchant Center, where Microsoft asks for a UCP-ready feed with return policy, support settings and a unique Merchant Item ID. Shopify also lists Copilot as an agentic storefront in early access, fed from Shopify Catalog. Paz tracks Copilot appearances with the other assistants.
If we fix it for ChatGPT, how soon does Gemini follow?+
Gemini reads Google Merchant Center and your indexed pages, so a source fix reaches it after the next feed sync and crawl. When it appears in a Gemini answer is up to Google. Compare the same questions on both assistants over the following weeks and read the trend.
